Mixed Berry Apple Crisp

This Mixed Berry Apple Crisp is a classic EASY dessert. The flavourful, apple and mixed berry base is topped with a delicious sweet oat crumble, making it a healthy and tasty dessert.

It’s the perfect time of year to pull out those frozen berries that you picked and froze last summer to bake some of your favourite berry desserts. Keep in mind that in most cases, you don’t want to thaw berries before using them in baking recipes.

I love having frozen berries on hand for smoothies, milkshakes, and pies, but this is by far my favourite berry recipe. Second, in line is my Lemon Blueberry Bread.

Every summer I visit local berry farms here in the Fraser Valley to pick fresh raspberries and strawberries, and then I stop at my favourite roadside farm stand for big delicious blueberries.

If you didn’t get a chance to pick fresh local Fraser Valley berries last summer, don’t fret ~ you can buy frozen berries year-round at Krause Berry Farms & Estate Winery in Langley, BC. Of course, you can also shop for frozen fruit at your local grocery store.

After picking for two or three days, I always think I’ve picked enough, but nooo ~ I usually run out because my whole family loves berries and we eat them all up well before the next berry picking season.

Ingredients Needed:

  • 4 cups sliced tart apples (about 4 medium)
  • 1 cup frozen or fresh mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries)
  • 2/3 to 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup margarine or butter, softened

How to Make Mixed Berry Apple Crisp

Heat oven to 375 degrees.

Arrange apples and berries in a greased 8 x 8 inch square pan or small oblong glass baking dish.

Mix remaining ingredients.

Sprinkle over apples and berries.

Bake until topping is golden brown and apples are tender ~ approximately 30 minutes.

This dessert is perfect served with home-made whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, and a few more berries on top!
