Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes with Maple Cream Cheese Frosting

You can use either homemade or store-bought unsweetened pumpkin puree in this recipe. Pumpkin pie filling contains a large amount of sugar – so be sure to use pumpkin puree.

Maple is a classic fall flavour and this maple cream cheese frosting recipe contains 100% pure and natural Canadian maple syrup. I drizzled a little more maple syrup on top of the icing for a more intense maple flavour. Yummy!

How to make Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Line two 12-cup muffin tins with paper cupcake liners.
  3. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder and spices.
  4. Using an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating until smooth. Mix in the pumpkin puree. Add the dry ingredients and mix until just incorporated. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared muffin tins.
  5. Bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. Let cool for 10 minutes. Remove from pans and let cool completely.

How to make Maple Cream Cheese Frosting

  1. Using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese with the butter and icing sugar until smooth.
  2. Add the maple syrup and blend.
  3. Using a piping bag, pipe the icing onto the cooled cupcakes.
  4. Top with a drizzle of maple syrup if desired.
Yummy!

This recipe can easily be used for two 8-inch cakes or mini cupcakes. You can top the cupcakes with sprinkles or candy corn too!

Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups lightly packed brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups homemade or canned unsweetened pumpkin puree

Maple Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 1 package cream cheese (250g)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups icing sugar
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
