These Rustic Wood Rounds Napkin Ties and Coasters add a lovely, natural addition to your wedding or special event.
For my daughter Lauren and fiancé Taylor’s wedding in July, they are incorporating a rustic, yet elegant touch to the decor. Using logs cut from trees on our property in the Shuswap, we created unique napkin ties and coasters. The wood rounds were cut, dried and sanded and feature a stamp with a jute string tie.
This DIY project is easier than you may think. Once you have the wood rounds sliced in the size you require for either the napkin ties or coasters, the rest of the project is simple and fun. Look for wood rounds sold locally, or purchase the natural wood slices online at places like Etsy and Amazon.
You will need:
- Natural wood rounds (in the size and amount of your choice)
- Acrylic or wood block stamps
- Ink pad in the colour of your choice (I used brown)
- 1 can of clear engine enamel or polyurethane spray (Lowe’s)
- Fine jute string
- You can also tie custom labels to your coaster sets.
For the napkin ties, drill a hole in each wood round centered at the top. The hole will need to be big enough to thread through the jute string. Stamp the front and back of your wood rounds.
Next, lay out the wood rounds on a sheet of packing paper or cardboard. Do not use newsprint as the colour may bleed onto the wood rounds when sprayed. Spray a fine coat of clear engine enamel or polyurethane spray over the wood rounds and let dry for two hours. Turn the wood rounds over and spray the other side and let dry for two hours.
The wood rounds will darken slightly, but the stamp will be sealed and protected against fading and water damage (especially needed for the coasters).
Finally, thread the jute string through each wood round ensuring there is enough length to tie around the napkin.
Similarly, for the coasters you follow the same instructions as for the napkin ties. Experiment with different stamp designs and ink colours that will match your event theme.
For Lauren and Taylor’s wedding we used a variety of flower stamps and brown ink for a more natural look. The coasters are packaged as a set of two using jute string and a custom thank you label. They are an extra special wedding favour that guests can take home as a memento.
Better yet, the napkin ties can be used again to add a rustic, yet elegant touch to any table setting.
Using these Rustic Wood Rounds Napkin Ties and Coasters is a surprisingly chic way to decorate for rustic weddings and events at a very reasonable cost.
